26 June 2008 africanpictures.net, as a part of Africa Media Online (AMO) Pty Ltd, is undertaking a ZAR5.5 million project to ensure that global audiences have access to quality pictures that reflect South African history, the various cultures as well as specialist imagery focused on the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Known as the African Image Pipeline (AIP), the project has been made possible with 70% grant funding from the European Union through Gijima KZN, an initiative of the Department of Economic Development in South Africa. AMO makes African heritage and media digital collections accessible to global art, media and product audiences. The company believes that the long term ownership of African commercial and heritage collections must remain in Africa with revenue returning to those to whom the collections belong. While others may have access to them (both locally and internationally) they need to be preserved in Africa for future generations. In this way, it will be Africans that tell Africa’s story. The AIP enables AMO to: train photo entrepreneurs from historically disadvantaged backgrounds; digitise additional images; upgrade their online media library and sales management system including introducing a multi-language search facility; and provide quality images to global audiences.
